Will a reverse osmosis water filter system soften water?
Yes. Water treated by a reverse osmosis water filter system is softened through the reverse osmosis process. However, filtering hard water, which is considered anything above 7 grains of hardness, with a reverse osmosis system will shorten the life of its membrane. Accordingly, the harder the water, the shorter the life of the membrane. Example: If you incoming water is 15 grains hard, you may only get 2-3 years of life from your reverse osmosis membrane.
